I thought I'd give an update as to what we've been doing since we arrived in England, and what our next plans are.
After living in Leeds for 3 months while looking for work and taking some less than desirable jobs, Adam finally got a start date for his awesome job at Gatwick airport. After a few months of interviews, aptitude tests and negotiations it was finally happening. We were moving to London!
I had enrolled in another two modules of my MBA to keep me entertained while I would be a lady of leisure. Happy days!
It was around this time that I got a phone call to come to Harwich for an interview for a job I didn't apply for. Where is Harwich you ask? It is a very small fishing village, about two hours out of London, near an international port. It is also the onsite headquarters of the construction site of the worlds biggest offshore wind farm.
I agreed as I had nothing better to do and it was an interesting, easy job in a new industry.
Unfortunately I was offered the job on the day of the interview and my dreams of being a lady of leisure evaporated. We decided financially it was better for us to live apart so we could both work and see each other on weekends. Adam would live in East Croydon on the southern outskirts of London and I would live near the port in Harwich.
"Can you start on Monday?" was followed by a mad dash out of Leeds to the quaint town of Colchester. I was lucky enough to find a new room in a house full of fantastic flatmates on the day I moved and thus my stay in Colchester started.
Colchester was the first recorded town in Britain. It is in East Anglia, which is the part of England where the Anglo-Saxons first wandered over to stay. The town centre is still surrounded by a crumbling Roman wall and there is even an impressive castle, complete with a mote.
Colchester is about half an hour by train from Harwich International Port. Each morning and afternoon I get to visit to thriving metropolitan that is Manningtree. (See picture)
The project I'm working on in Harwich is interesting, but unfortunately office work is still office work..
